Transforming independence at mealtimes: Support Amir with nutritional meal planning
Let’s talk about Amir*.
When he joined Abacus, Amir was under-weight and struggled to make independent choices about food. Sometimes he’d take food that wasn't his, and swallow mouthfuls without chewing.
Abacus worked with Amir's family and a nutritionist to create a healthy meal plan that fitted with his cultural needs.
His support team discovered the right prompts and encouragement to help Amir focus on his meal and chew his food properly.
Now, Amir isn’t inclined to take food from other people. With support, he eat meals that form a healthy, nutritious diet.
He’s finding it easier to make choices around mealtimes, and tidies up after dinner with greater independence.
Amir will likely always need support at mealtimes. But the steps he's made to increase his independence when it comes to food are huge.
He's gained independence in other areas of daily life too - and is growing the confidence and curiosity to explore new hobbies and activities.
This is what Supported Living looks like for Amir, but it looks different for every person we support. Individual needs. Personal input. Meaningful outcomes.
