‘A day in the life’ with Amy: Marketing, Comms & Special Projects

Each month, we’ll be catching up with someone from our brilliant team, and finding out what they get up to in a day in the life at Abacus.

This time, we chat to the amazing Amy!

Hello! Who are you? & What’s your favourite emoji? 👀

I'm Amy! 💯

Tell us a bit about you

The length of time I've spent thinking about my answer to this question probably about sums it up... I'm a very deep thinker! I think things through with a lot of research and detail, and I'm usually not that impulsive. I go to great lengths to figure out the best possible way to bring an idea to life, but I'm trying to get better at jumping in at the deep end every now and then!

What is your role at Abacus Care & Support?

I support Abacus with Marketing, Comms and Special Projects. I've been around for a while, helping out with different areas of the business, but what I enjoy getting stuck into most are the things that take a bit of creative thinking!

What does a typical day look like in your role?

I do have a regular pattern in my role, but it works more to a monthly rather than daily schedule. So, within a typical day, I'll usually be looking at how I can get closer to completing my monthly tasks. Alongside that, though, I get involved with lots of spontaneous tasks or bright ideas that exist outside of any regular pattern.

What are the first things you do when you start your workday?

The first thing I do is switch the radio on! I'm a bit radio obsessed – I remember messing around with some old microphones as a child and playing 'radio presenters' – and it'll usually keep me company from morning until evening. Most of my work is computer-based, and having the radio on in the background helps me focus on my tasks.

What does good teamwork look like in your role?

Clear communication is everything. You can't work on something you don't understand, so I really appreciate having clarity on the goal or purpose of a project. In turn, I do my best to make sure any requests or questions I have for others are as clear and detailed as possible.

What motivates you to do your best work each day?

My family and I have a long history of supporting children and adults with support needs, so it feels quite natural to be working with a company like Abacus. I don't usually work directly with the people we support, but it's important to me that the way Abacus markets itself is reflective and celebratory of people with complex needs.

What skills are most important for your role?

I think it's really important to have a strong attention to detail. My role involves sharing designs and information with others – people we support, staff, industry professionals and the general public — so I try to make sure the things I work on are both accurate and stylish. I think I'm generally pretty perceptive, but there's also a skill in knowing when I need to put something down and revisit it with fresh eyes later on.

If you could describe your job in three words, what would they be?

3 Cs - creative, curious, chaotic(!)

And finally, what dreams or projects do you have coming up for your role?

Earlier this year, I led a project to overhaul Abacus' branding. We achieved some great photos and videos, a new website and a really useful batch of branding assets. I'd like to roll the branding out in full. In other words, there are still some documents that need to be created or updated to make sure the impression we give is consistent. I think it'll be really satisfying to get that done!

Thanks for sharing with us, Amy!
